GORTZ HAUS GALLERY

This was the offical website of the Gortz Haus Gallery which for a number of years advertised itself as “the perfect venue for your wedding ceremony”. However in 2013 the Odgaards refused to host a homosexual wedding at the Gortz Haus Gallery. A lawsuit followed since denying service to customers because of their sexual orientation was a clear violation of Iowa law, which prohibits discrimination in public accommodations. The Odgaards not only were ordered to pay $5,000 to the couple whom they had refused, but also to stop hosting weddings at the Gortz Haus Gallery.
The Odgaards now has a ministry called God's Original Design, established to advance Christian teachings, Biblical ordinances and natural laws as God intended.

I own a oriental rug cleaning nyc based company. When the news of the lawsuit that was brought against the owners of the Gortz Haus Gallery hit the news channels and internet, I along with many people I knew watched to see what the outcome would be. It was heartening that the lawsuit was eventually dropped. I didn't realize Iowa has been at the forefront in recognizing that people have no more say in their sexual orientation than in their race, and everyone is entitled to equal rights and to be treated with dignity. This incident was a hot topic for quite awhile. A number of clients even brought it up when I was either picking up carpets to be cleaned or restored, or returning cleaned oriental carpets. I received a phone call from a distraught woman who had spilled coffee over a family heirloom oriental rug. When I went ot assess the damage she had her computer on and there was Republican presidential hopeful Sen. Ted Cruz at a campaign stop in Iowa, arguing that the Odgaards were victims of “liberal fascism,” noting, “The modern Democratic Party has decided their devotion to mandatory gay marriage in all 50 states is so unforgiving that there is no longer room for defending religious liberty.” I cringed at his insistence that the Odgaards religious beliefs were being trampled. But the way I look at the situation, the Odgaards were only asked to rent their premises for gay couples' wedding ceremonies. They weren't being asked to change their Mennonite beliefs or views or engage in prohibited behavior. The Odgaards were just being asked to put into practice their belief that other people have the right to live differently from themselves. The new customer looked at me and just said "I'm glad that the gay couple push this and filed a suit. I think it showed courage and they brought this issue out into the open. A lot of people have been talking about this for a long time." I couldn't have agreed more. And yes, we were able to remove the coffee stain and returned her carpet looking better than ever- so she said.

The Gortz Haus Gallery is located in an elegant landmark stone building that served as the home of St. Peter Lutheran Church from 1937 to 2001. Having outgrown this space, the church moved to a new facility. The notable structure was left susceptible to demolition -- but perseverance saved this historic building from demise, and in April 2002 the gracious space was reopened, unveiling a fabulous new bistro, art gallery, frame shoppe and floral shoppe. Original works of art, jewelry, gifts, home decor, and beautiful flower arrangements enhance a fine dining experience in the historic Governors District of Grimes. The picturesque setting of Gortz Haus makes it the perfect venue for your wedding ceremony, reception, rehearsal dinner, baby shower, anniversary or other special event.
